To be honest, I would be hesitant to take such a stand for risk of making judgements without properly thinking about the situation. This is something that has been blown out of proportion but yes does not reflect the best of EVE players. However it reflects simply the reality.
I have seen plenty of "lovemails" from many pilots by other pilots and so on. To be blunt every game that exists has a high likelyhood that someone, at least one individual somewhere, views that game as their sole reason for living. I have seen a 48 year old say the same thing about UO when he had a beautiful 4 yr old daughter who loved him.
Yes he made the mistake in my opinion of stating the individuals name. Outside of that he made no direct statement to encourage him to commit suicide that I could hear in that entire alliance panel. I heard him state his eve character name, and said something to the effect of find him.
The rules of the game are simple, undock in any space, and you are a potential target. People play the game the way they want to, then send these evemails of anger, pain, plight, and all sorts of emo rage mails against the person who upset their reality.
The other problem exists that the player is only subjected to any possible 'attacks' by only means of logging into the game. He gave no personal identifying information of the person other than his characters name.
Also keep in mind The Mittani was elected by players to represent them and their play style. If you are in a PVP corp you know how many crymails or lovemails float about the eve universe and all sorts of crazy stories and pleads by the victims to give them something for their own neglegence.
I can also contest to the fact that if you are familiar with lovemail chains, those that continue over multiple replies, the victim will often result to saying an ever changing plethora of escalating reasons they should receive charity from the aggressors.
All the above doesn't excuse giving his name, but the "victim" in this case is only subjected to that he choses of his own volition.
So take the tone down a notch, keep the same request, but keep your dignity and dont sound like so many media personalities who cry havoc before all the facts are in.
******** EDIT BELOW **********
Maybe the Mittani should have informed CCP about the player who claimed suicidal thoughts.
The police would have heard about it through the chain of staff then their local police department, they would go and pick the guy/girl up and put them in as a section 13 (monitored hospice) and it would have been a much better TR0LL! |
